Released on February 16, 2015, These Human Beings opens with Sgobbio’s explosive “Through Piat”, evoking the rhythmic propulsion of 90’s drum n’ bass with a dynamic sensibility of experienced jazzmen. “Baldwin”, “Lo Viatge”, and “Path Man” highlight the trio’s suite-style approach to composition and find Vernizzi at home on both tenor and soprano saxophone. Traditional conventions are demolished in “Jersey Zombies”, when Sgobbio and Wight deconstruct a laid back hip-hop groove into compulsive waves of rhythmic dialogue. Having no bassist allows Sgobbio the freedom to manipulate harmonies and intervallic structures. Vernizzi’s “First Minute of Inception” and “Melan” unveil a Steve Reich influenced minimalist concept of shifting melodic fragments and light, airy textures. The album closes with Wight’s spoken word on “Changing World”, a spiritually haunting and introspective view on humanity that was originally conceived by the drummer’s father, the late singer-songwriter David Wight.
